Note

This is a beginner gross profit calculation exercise designed for interactive environment demo.

Interactive Environment

In the interactive Excel-like environment, cells that you have to fill in are highlighted in yellow. In this case user has to correctly fill D12 (row 12, column D)

Theory

Gross Profit is a key financial metric that shows the revenue remaining after deducting the Cost of Sales (CoS), also known as Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). For Starlight Cinema, this represents the money left from Ticket Sales, Advertising, and Food & Beverages revenue after accounting for the direct costs associated with producing or delivering those services.

It's an essential figure for finance students, analysts, and entry-level professionals to assess the core profitability of the business before operating expenses like rent or salaries.

Step-by-Step Calculation

1

Identify Total Revenue: Sum the revenue from all categories—Ticket Sales, Advertising, and Food & Beverages. This is the total income generated by the cinema.

2

Identify Total Cost of Sales (CoS): Add up the CoS for each category, which includes costs like film distributor fees (for tickets), ad production costs, and food/beverage supplies.

3

Calculate Gross Profit: Subtract the Total CoS from the Total Revenue. The formula is:

Gross Profit = Total Revenue - Total CoS

Requirements

  • Use the revenue and CoS values provided in the table to calculate the Total Revenue and Total CoS.
  • Select the D12 (row 12, column D) cell and press = to switch to formula mode.
  • In the yellow-highlighted cell for Gross Profit D12 (row 12, column D), enter the result of Total Revenue minus Total CoS.
